In 2006 the Lutheran Church in Vanderbijlpark started with a pre-primary school, Care Bears. Twelve children joined the school. One of these children had special needs. In April another 2 children with special needs came to Care Bears. More people heard that Care Bears took in special needs children and this resulted in a waiting list. In 2007 Care Bears had one mainstream class and started another class for special needs. Before the end of 2007 16 children were on a waiting list. At the end of 2007 Care Bears received a loan of R60 000. This amount was used to build a third classroom.
In 2008 Wings for Life School for Special Education was founded. Wings for Life started with 2 learners and they used the library of the Lutheran Church as a classroom. In 2009 the church garage was transformed into a classroom into which the learners moved. In 2009 a wooden classroom was donated to be used as the second classroom and in 2010 another wooden classroom was donated to be used as the third classroom.
In 2009 a section 21 company (non-profit organisation) - Wings for Life Institute for the disabled – was formed. The school received its Section 18A status in August 2012, which ensures that donations are tax deductible.
At the beginning of 2014 Wings for Life had 7 classrooms of which 1 was a modified garage and 3 belonged to the Lutheran Church - 2 wooden classrooms and a Kwikspace mobile classroom. In 2009 we already knew that we would need to build a school and in April 2014 – after years of prayer, the dedication and hard work of many people and the Lord’s faithfulness - we finally moved into our new building!
